Streamline Solar Development

Advocacy Action Plan

Solar energy is cheap and popular—let’s make it easier to build.

States can help by streamlining the “siting” process to create a more consistent, pro-solar policy environment.

A strategic framework to focus your advocacy and maximize productivity.

  • Start by contacting your state legislators, because they are the primary decision-makers on this topic. They vote for or against the legislation we want to see passed.

Then, write a Letter to the Editor about the benefits of grid-scale solar and why siting reform is so urgently needed. Often, it’s simply a lack of knowledge about solar technology that allows mis-information to spread. We’re softening the ground for future projects with pro-solar information.

In the same spirit, amplifying this solution to your own network can help connect the dots for the people with whom you are most influential – your family and friends. Most people don’t know that solar brings major benefits, yet is being stifled due to siting laws. Heck, most people – even climate-concerned people - have never heard of siting laws!

We contact the governor because the governor is  a “key stakeholder” with outsized influence among state legislators. In some states, governors bring an agenda to the state legislators and works closely with them to enact it. In other states, the governor simply weighs in from time to time. Either way, we want siting reform at the top of the governor’s list.
Finally, if you’re ready to do all you can to make siting reform a reality in your state, meet with your state legislator. This is the most impactful way to advocate as a constituent, since you get to connect directly with the decision-maker or their staff. It takes a bit more effort than an email, but it’s well worth it.

Start with Playbook #1 and move through the rest at your own pace. Each Action Playbook can be accomplished in under one hour. Want to accomplish this advocacy in community? Join a festive, facilitated Hour of Action event.

📱 BONUS ACTION:

Mobilize local support for clean energy projects.

RSVP to a special phone banking Hour of Action! In partnership with Greenlight America, we’ll call local residents who live near clean energy projects and encourage them to speak up in key local votes.
